On the morning of January 15 1947 a woman walking in a Los Angeles neighbourhood noticed what she thought was a department store mannequin in a vacant lot. It was the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short — bisected cleanly at the waist, completely drained of blood, posed with surgical precision, with a grotesque smile cut into her face. Seventy-seven years of investigation have produced over 500 named suspects and no conviction. The Black Dahlia murder remains the most famous unsolved homicide in American history.
