Helios Airways Flight 522: The Ghost Plane That Flew Itself Into a Mountain
On the morning of August 14 2005 a Boeing 737 operating as Helios Airways Flight 522 took off from Larnaca Cyprus bound for Athens. Halfway through the flight Greek air traffic control lost contact. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept. What the pilots saw through the cockpit window was one of the most disturbing sights in aviation history — the co-pilot slumped unconscious in his seat and nobody else visible at the controls. The plane flew on for two hours before crashing into a hillside killing all 121 people aboard.
