In 1587 England established its first permanent settlement in the Americas on Roanoke Island off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Governor John White sailed back to England for supplies. War delayed his return for three years. When he finally came back in 1590 every one of the 115 settlers — including his own daughter and granddaughter — was gone. No bodies. No signs of battle. Just one word carved into a post. The Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of America’s oldest and most enduring mysteries.
